M23 rebels have seized Goma and its airport, forcing UN peacekeepers and SANDF troops to retreat. Electricity, water, and internet have been cut off. The Rwandan-backed rebels now control key areas, with reports of looting and executions.

At least 13 South African soldiers have died, and 80+ are wounded, left behind with no medical care, clean water. A voice note from a female soldier: “Guys with their heads blown off… we’re alone and many women here, no one is coming, what if they rape us?” Soldiers fear what’s next.

Over 2 million civilians are displaced, hospitals are overwhelmed, and humanitarian aid has halted. The SA government faces backlash as Minister Angie Motshekga allegedly took a VIP jet to negotiate but left wounded soldiers behind, this trip alone cost the South African taxpayer roughly 600 000$ - keep in mind the soldiers are left without food or water.

There is an evacuation plan, but the South African government has no more troop carrier airplanes. A private Russian company was contracted to evacuate the troops but they did not leave to the DRC, because they have not been paid yet.

The UN peacekeeping mission has collapsed, with reports of peacekeepers surrendering weapons as rebels take hostages. SA troops lack air support, drones, and essential equipment to counter M23’s advanced military capabilities.

The situation is spiraling, this is now a full blown regional war.
