You know, from a bigger perspective, I see in this malaise the fallout of the End of History thinking.
It's the post-Cold War idea that now we've all figured it out, everyone has come to the right side (of technocratic neoliberalism) and from now on it's just a question of rearranging the deck chairs. There will be no storms or any other nasty surprises, there will be no need to change course, and the passengers most certainly aren't supposed to mutiny and complain about where the ship is heading.
The people in power in continental Europe have bought hook-line-and-sinker into this idea, that much is clear. And the idea in itself stops them from even considering anything else, because baked into it is the assumption that this is The Way.
It's received wisdom on steroids, and ossified.
And from that, we get both the present stagnation, and the European elite's reaction to not just the new problems, but to the people pointing out the new problems.
