Small batch SMD assembly with a reflow oven or a hot plate is entirely practical, depending on your ability to place the parts. I wouldn’t try it with 0201 parts though. Assembly in factory for small run SMD designs is entirely practical with multiple houses offering good service.
That’s why I’m working up to doing prototypes with the chunkier SMD passives I can reliably place, and assembly service with the smaller ones for final completed designs. It’s just the way things have gone.
