The neat thing about our nuclear plants is that when they don't need to be making electricity, they swap out the uranium rods with cobalt rods to generate cobalt-60 for mass-sterilization of things like medical equipment.
This big bundle of Co-60 rods, once processed, are placed in a centre of a concrete bunker, and basically a conveyor belt sends in the stuff to get irradiated and comes out sterile.
Seeing a storage pool full of cobalt-60 is still one of the most memorable moments of my life. It is the most beautiful blue I have ever seen. 🧵2/4
