Diaspora began as a crowdfunding campaign by 4 recent graduates, looking for a paid summer project. But the crowdfunding was so high profile they raised 10 times what they expected, and the pressure was on to deliver the FarceBook-killer they pitched.
That original pitch was for a purely P2P app ("distributed"), with no servers. Not even the relays used in Nostr. They quickly realised they couldn't do this with the skills and funding they had, so they pivoted to a federated server model.
