In defense of Nikki Haley -- ugh, I can't believe I just wrote that -- I was taught something very close to the "Lost Cause” myth in a history class at a large-ish public university. I very well might have argued in good faith afterward that the Civil War wasn't about slavery. After all, a PhD historian explained to our class why it wasn't. He was the expert who'd studied this. Why would I doubt him?
Of course, unlike Nikki, my friends and I went on to learn the truth of it.
