The pay rates are a lot higher in the US. At one megacorp, a Canadian employee transferred to San Francisco and doubled her salary with 0 effort because the default pay bands are so high. She was making a ton more than her manager, and probably on par with the director.
(She was also really, really, really good. No one wanted to let her go.)
