Doesn’t matter if you’ve met them before or not. A typical interaction with a cashier will involve three or four endearments:
“Hello, duck… that’ll be £4.50, sweets… on the top of the card reader, love.”
I just had a phone call from the garage, and when I answered the phone the woman on the other end said “Hello love, it’s [name].”
(I would only use “my love” for someone I know a bit, personally, but I call everyone “love”. I make a conscious effort not to do it online, because I know it doesn’t travel well.)
