lnstead of trying to get in on the surveillance cake, the EU should force WhatsApp to encrypt properly and in an auditable way, i.e. encryption by an open-source client.

(without sending cleartext or keys to a server before sending the encrypted message. And no access by other apps or Google Android surveillance to the cleartext message... And of course no scanning the private message for illegal content.)
