I just glanced over at PETI. We're well past 10 hours and the LED is still on. That's a strong indicator that I'm right in my hypothesis that the problem was with the batteries all along.
That being the case will be confirmed in the morning, but it does send me back to the drawing board on what should be included in the power management updates.
