I am aware at some point I made an overview on this series but it apparently doesn’t exist where I posted it anymore. Luckily when this one is done it will be put in a place I know it won’t vanish unless my computer goes dead. SO, with that out of the way be aware (even if nobody gives a shit) this is a rewatch, I have been going back to a lot of stuff just to watch it without immediately writing about it possibly because I had gotten so sick and tired of the blandness I had been seeing with very few instances of even decent at best being put out or found by me so let me recap what I thought of the show the first time I watched it after I had backed its english dubs creation on kickstarter (my username is in the credits of the disc with the dub if someone doesn’t believe me or cares to look).
My first thoughts on emma when I finished watching it was that it was a nice breath of fresh air compared to many anime but it was obviously because it was more of a romance novel turned show rather than an anime and that was fine for me and I think I gave it I believe an 8 or 7 at the time. So with that being said has a rewatch changed my mind or are my thoughts the same as before? Let me say that it was still a good experience to see it again however my, I guess you could call it “critics eye” turned on as I noticed that for some reason that in context of the show makes no sense, many men seem to be attracted to emma compared to other females in the show and from what we see of emma she doesn’t give any reason for this at all, in fact she was basically a insert character who rarely had a thought of her own or it was very rarely shown so she came off as kinda a mary sue although not as annoying with traits like when I watched daria in her relationship as she constantly would push the person who liked her away, or always have an issue that made being a couple a problem extra. Though emmas circumstances in the series are more justified it felt like she was needlessly complicating thing and it made me have sympathy for the girl her love interest jilted considering she wasn’t that bad of a girl where emma seemed to want a relationship but was overly content with working until she died. Yes, I know her circumstances, but there’s a point where your circumstances are not enough justification for your behavior.
Something I think would have fixed the show at least a little is if almost nobody wanted to be with her sense she was so plain besides the russian guy and her romantic interest so she wouldn’t come off so mary sue-ish. Something else that could have helped is seeing bits of her past throughout the film to show why she as content with her limited life style or her maybe writing in a diary about how grateful she was for the women who took her in and appreciating the guys affection but knowing how low she stood on the totem pole in life and not wanting to cause him or anyone any trouble so long as she could merely live her life in the smallest of comforts or something.
In terms of animation it looked pretty good, the characters did their jobs well, the music stuck with me a bit but nothing that I’d want to hear on my playlist or anything and to top things off the voices they got did pretty well imo.
Best Quality: It stands out above most other anime for being a romance novel instead of a romcom type or basic romantic drama.
Worst Quality: To many guys found emma attractive and us as the viewer (besides our personal interest) were not shown why she stood out in the world above all the other women.
Awards-
Fancy Stained Carpet: If it was cleaned up a bit I think this show could have been much better but sense that ain’t happening the parts that were an issue stuck out like a sore thumb.
Antique Street Performer: Sometimes you gotta stop and appreciate something you don’t see a lot of anymore being done well even if it’s just for a brief moment in your short lifetime and I don’t know of much if any other anime that really did something like emma did so it was enjoyable to see.
Sobered View: I watched this more than once and my opinion on it changed after another viewing, I’m not sure if this means I was enjoying myself without thinking or perhaps I can’t help but be to critical of anything including stuff I enjoy but either way I don’t regret rewatching this title and I could see myself doing it again to see if my opinion changes again.
Overall Emma was a good enough show that it’s ranking didn’t fall to far but due to me seeing flaws in it this time around it will be dropped from I believe an 8 to 7/10 often times on the same level as most shounens sense it is a enjoyable experience but I can’t look past it’s issues.
