The first one shows the seepage. If I put e.g. a fabric pot there it would wick up the moisture, eh?
The second is a close up of the medium. The rains have washed down most of the "stuff" so the top is mostly wood chips. Just under that if you lift up the woody bit the soon-to-be soil is dark, almost black!
