I have recurring dreams about buying old used cars and maintaining a car collection.
Across dreams that happen weeks or months or years apart, I apparently keep a dream tally of the cars I buy, and they come up now and again.
Other than one new car that replaced my actual car after it was damaged in an accident(I believe new cars symbolize something different), none of them are nice new cars you could get a license and drive, and none of them are the sort of cars that become sexy musclecars once you've repaired them, they're all old things I picked up for next to nothing that likely don't run. Something boring like an old Malibu.
Somehow, I intuitively understand what the dreams are about, and what they mean. A used car like that, it's a responsibility you're taking on. Once it's yours, you have to store it, or fix it, or get rid of it, but no matter what, once you've accepted it you have to do something. If you do the right things, these responsibilities can grow into something really great. The used car you bought can be fixed up into a great vehicle with time, and money, and effort. Then taking on the responsibility pays off. On the other hand, you can end up with all these vehicles and you have no ability to handle them all because you took on too many, and suddenly every garage space you have is filled with these used cars, projects you claim you'll "get to someday". The dreams where I panic because I'm getting way too many useless used cars, I'm telling myself that I'm taking on too many responsibilities. Sometimes I dream that I'm planning to figure out what to do with all these used cars, which is a dream telling me about trying to manage my responsibilities. Last weekend, I had a dream where I was considering the used cars I own that were viable to drive, and I didn't have any anxiety about it. It does seem to suggest that the responsibility I've taken on is in some ways starting to pay off.
