We still put a lot of work into making sure that the data that we share with our partners (which we need to do to make Firefox commercially viable) is stripped of any identifying information, or shared only in the aggregate, or is put through our privacy preserving technologies (like OHTTP).
That sounds a lot like federated cohort of interest (FLoC).
Which is exactly what Google proposed in Chrome some time ago.
And just 4 years ago, Mozilla criticized it, stating that it doesn’t actually protect user privacy.
Now they’re basically doing the same thing (aggregating user information with the promise of stripping personal identifiers, selling it to advertisers, and getting targeted ads back as a service), telling us that it actually respects privacy.
I’m also getting genuinely sick of Mozilla’s hypocrisy and doublethink talk - “it’s ads, but it’s not really ads” - “it’s about selling data to 3rd-parties, but also not really” - “it’s about providing us with a blanket license over everything you do in Firefox, but don’t panic, it’s just something that we need to provide you with the basic functionalities”.
We can all see where things are going, and Mozilla is losing even more of their reputation by thinking that their users are dumb digitally illiterates who can be gaslighted by hollow sales pitch.
I’d rather hear from them something like “yes, we’re enshittifying because we soon may lose the Google bribes that made up 90% of our revenue stream so far - if you have better ideas they’re more than welcome”.
They would at least be honest and save a little bit of face with their loyal users.
