Interestingly this is what happened in Japan's 'lost decades' - lots of commentators were saying Japan was going down the pan due to stagnating GDP, but actually as the population was dropping, for the person on the street things didn't looks so bad.... unfortunately in the UK GDP/per capita has also stagnated, with us rated around mid-20s in the world rankings (just to give an idea of our 'real' relative wealth)
