I often buy random books, or borrow them from the library. Usually that's either from lack of availability of a specific book I'm after, a cover catching my attention, or an author I've never read. Nearly always a good result, very few disappointments.
I don't tend to follow authors, and never read reviews or look for award winners. They can have their mass market appeal, the more organic approach is more interesting to me
