I hadn't considered the argument I made in my OP before and genuinely don't know how I feel about it, but the more I reflect on it the more it seems wrong to me to focus on this when there are so many deeper structural problems in science. I just realised in replying to someone else later in the thread that the CRediT taxonomy recognises acquiring funding for doing the research as sufficient for authorship, but not providing funding for publishing the research. I can't immediately see a justification for this other than that it codifies existing power relationships and hierarchy in academia.
