Low Information Voter on Nostr: Conscription Resistance As Duty Conscription has been militarily pretty useless ...
Conscription Resistance As Duty
Conscription has been militarily pretty useless (often actually harmful due to demoralising previously volunteer units) in all times and places, but is often politically very profitable for a struggling regime.
Conscripts are effectively "disappeared" just like regular hostages, and their families then tend to publicly support the government and refrain from public dissent out of fear of the conscript's ill-treatment / frontline transfer / non-return. Conscript deaths are officially reported tardily or not at all, to preserve the govt's hold over the families as long as possible.
US & AU during Vietnam, Iraq 1979 through 1991, Ukraine and Russia today - the same policies, for the same reasons.
In the below (recent, unverified) video, the young man in black escapes from a military recruiter with the help of bystanders: the older man in grey, and the blonde woman. The recruiter then positions himself aggressively and berates the blonde woman, who berates him right back. Even the young woman in black, who takes no part in the scuffle, is standing facing the recruiter, hands on hips.
Massive respect, wish I could zap them.
