I've recommended Ubuntu many times to beginners and it worked quite well. They usually don't have bigger issues and many still use it today. I also come back to fedora for some reason. QubesOS was my favorite, but not a good choice on notebooks. NixOS is interesting, but I haven't had enough time and motivation to really give it a fair chance yet.
