But then surely 3rd party OS's would allow upgrading the kernel as long as it was the same across all devices, surely some manufacturers would update it? Things like LineageOS killing off devices for having old kernels wouldn't be a thing? Even Linux OS's on Ex-Android phones don't get newer kernels. Maybe it's more of a task than I think, especially based on your explanation. But it doesn't answer why the kernel is never updated.

Maybe it's a hardware thing.
