I propose that a science fiction novel passes the coffee test if there are no scenes where two or more characters discuss: their love of coffee, the terrible coffee they're drinking, how they don't have real coffee, how little coffee they have left, how they can't imagine what it was like in the pre-collapse era when you could have coffee whenever you wanted, how synthetic coffee isn't as good, a superior's secret stash of coffee, the coffee they could buy if they did just this one last job,
