npub1llh8pl6hed9yzgrt6nf250ve03zdhqchpj6raq7l3u33sty7rgcs5zmh0y (npub1llh…mh0y) oh hi! I’ve got a flock of 8 roaming around a big yard that’s about half-full of beds, and I use a variety of strategies to mostly keep them from destroying things.
I use a lot of chicken wire. The plastic dipped kind is the best, it’s much softer to handle and it lasts for years. I’ll cut triangles of chicken wire and twist the cut edges into a cone, then drop the cone over a plant. I make semi-permanent bed covers with pvc pipe and chicken wire, and whenever I finish up with a bed, I’ll pull the wire and let the chickens ravage that bed.
I’m going to plant corn in a larger square patch this year, and I’m planning on using floppy plastic snow fencing. Hopefully I can use step-in temporary t-posts. The idea there is that they don’t like to fly *over* barriers. They like to fly up, sit on the fence, then hop down the other side. The Internet says a relatively short but floppy fence will deter them - we’ll see, lol!
I’ve just started putting fiberglass hoops and bird netting over my strawberries, and it’s much more of a PITA than chicken wire on pvc!
