There's a feral cat I feed when he shows up, and I keep an eye on his health. I tried, but he is not at all interested in being an indoor cat.

There is one other cat I sometimes see outdoors. That cat is definitely someone's pet. His long hair is always groomed, shorn during summer's heat, and he's very well fed.

This morning, after allowing time for the feral cat to eat, I went to pick up the food and water dishes. Leaving out cat food is a really bad idea in these parts, as it attracts many critters of varying sizes.

The long hair cat was munching on the leftover food. I apologized to the cat, and picked up the food. That cat fussed at me, stridently and at length. No hissing or growling. Just a lot of feline trash talking. I explained my reasoning. He was not having it.

I felt bad for taking food away from a well fed cat.

I don't think this impacts the relationship between myself and the long haired cat. Which for the past couple of years involves the long haired cat periodically showing up on my porch, demanding food. Then going on, at length, about my failings as an air breathing organism when I don't give him food.

Status quo maintained.
