I do something similar. But I just have an always on Mac that downloads all my photos using the Photos app, then have an external Time Machine disk there. It’s crazy to me that some people don’t even pay for cloud storage and lose their phone and freak out because they lost their photos. Like, your photos are irreplaceable!
