There is some truth in what you say yes.
We are both the master of our fate and … we are in control of nothing, at the same time. We cannot even control our own body, when it gets sick, when it gets injured, when it ultimately drops us. Our thoughts come to us without a visa whether we invited them or not. Our emotions rise and fall to a rhythm we can influence but not control. Our memories stay with us without our control. Events happen we didn’t schedule on our New Year’s resolution list, people die we are close to. Events are not in our control.
All that we have the capacity to control is our own mind, and therefore the responses, decisions and actions that go with that.
That is why freedom in the mind is the ultimate self sovereignty.
I would say “It was your responsibility”. Has a different vibe to “it was your fault” which implies self-blame, and blame in any flavor does not help us to see things as they are.
