It's not just the California tax system that has these dumb issues. I had a similar issue with the IRS once, when a tax bill got applied to the wrong year, and then I got a threatening letter but our tax guy dealt with it. The old tax guy retired, the new tax guy is really lazy and said I needed to contact FTB to have it changed.
