The idea continued up until about the end of the 19th century, at least at places like Oxford, where professors couldn't be married or have relations with women. Charles Dodgson, better known as Lewis Carroll who wrote "Alice in Wonderland", was single for this reason. Again, it's a callback to the university's earlier history as a collection of monasteries.
