The third lie is that violence redeems the crime of having not earned life—which means that when those who are deemed to have not earned life are abused or harmed or killed, the violence is not only something that doesn't threaten our safety, but represents safety itself.
And these lies seemed so intrinsic to people's beliefs as to be foundational. And indeed, these lies could be found in the very founding of our country. So I think of them as our founding lies. (3/4)
