I think the real joy of Guy Fawkes' night is remembering that powered interests (Vatican vs. British Crown) absolutely can and do end up fighting each other. Those conflicts offer cracks where the rest of us can put our crowbars, to tear down the cages they've built for us.

When given a choice between two authoritarians, the number one thing to do is to ensure that they inflict as much damage upon each other as possible, and otherwise, try to stay out of the way.
