If Git constantly tells you that a commit "is" a diff, is it not just an implementation detail that it's stored as a snapshot (that's, again, sometimes kinda stored as a sort of diff for compression reasons)?
But that argument would only work if Git actually consistently took a commit to mean a diff, which it kinda doesn't, so I wouldn't be comfortable to say they're "actually" diffs either
