I share this story every year because I was an undergraduate engineering student at Toronto at the time. It took me decades to realise how much it had shaped my professional life, including helping to found an engineering college that has an institutional commitment to gender equity, carrying out research projects on gender and engineering education, and writing, speaking, and consulting around creating equitable and inclusive learning environments in STEM.
