Genetically speaking, a person's sex is locked in when a sperm cell meets an egg cell. So why is the term "gender assigned at birth", and not "gender assigned at conception"?
My guess is that it's yet another neurolinguistic artifact of leftist politics. To reinforce the idea that a person isn't a person until they pass the birth canal. A person who has been conceived but not born must never be considered a person, lest it trigger cognitive dissonance when they casually speak of murdering it.
