Hmmm, TIL: You can have tmux display floating popup windows. The background panes still update while the popup is open, and you can even drag it around. Only catches are: You can't interact with the background panes and you can't resize the floating panes. At least as far as I know.
Open a tmux window with a shell and type:
tmux display-popup -E 'ls | fzf'
