I don't know of a logical pathway from "failing social media company" to "beloved non-profit user-supported social media space"
There is no reason tumblr "must" end. There are enough people who love it and would pay to keep it alive if only they could get some basic respect from those running the show. There are even users who'd do the work of running it, like those who wrote the extensions.
But, instead it will languish, slowly break and people will move on.
