I'll also add, about 7 years ago I started experiencing knee pain after playing some soccer (which didn't add up because I'm in my twenties). Went to a physiotherapist and they diagnosed me with weak hips and tensed up quads. So tense (because of compensation for my weak hips and lack of deep stretching) that the muscles were pulling the patellar ligament off axis and my knee cap was not aligned causing wear and pain. I started foam rolling my legs, deep stretching and strengthening my hips, and the knee pain went away. I give myself 30 minutes before every workout to do deep stretches (holding poses for 50 seconds), foam rolling and hip strengthening to keep these symptoms at bay and so far its worked.
