As a bit of background: juries have an absolute right to acquit even when the defendant admits committing the crime but pleads not guilty (known as bringing a "perverse verdict"). This has been established since 1670 (Bushell's case), and was used recently to acquit the Colston Four, who admitted dumping the statue of a slave trader into a river, but denied criminal damage.
