Telegram CEO Pavel Durov arrested in France…

If there is a throat to choke, it will be choked.

If there is a head to cut off, it will be cut off.

Platform owners that bend the knee to totalitarianism will censor and deplatform you.

Platform owners that do not comply will be arrested and threatened with the full force of “The Law.”

Nostr is a Hydra. You cannot kill Nostr. There is no single throat to choke, no one head to cut off. Succeed in cutting off one head and two will grow in its place.

-Treat the arrest of the Telegram CEO as an emergency.

-Advocate for his freedom and for all freedom tech providers.

-Support and build things that function without a CEO, like some aspects of Nostr. When authoritarian Europe or the US arrests you, be able to say, “I literally can’t control it, it’s already out there, and we are legion.”

-Tell me and others, as capital providers, how to accelerate this.

nostr: see everything
Run nodes.

Run relays.

Run mints.

Run meetups.

Run something.

Just don’t sit still.
When platforms start to fall, protocols will remain. you can’t arrest email, http, or nostr.

X, telegram, rumble, *can’t* have free speech in a world where governments can compel to censor by threat of imprisonment.

The world may realize they need nostr sooner than they thought.
speed is the most important feature.

being able to send a note/post via text, have it fully render, and instantly load when someone clicks on it, is one of the biggest things that will help build network effect.

communities, such as ditto, and giving people the option to make them private and encrypted, is a net new feature not found on any other platform that will draw people to the nostr social app protocol, and be the best onboarding and discovery tool out there. people care a lot more about privacy than censorship-resistance.

getting as much content and information on here, welcoming of the bots and agentic AI, will allow this protocol to be the only one that can definitively state: "see everything." especially since no individual/corporation/government can delete your content or account.

this is what i would prioritize. the past two years of nostr has been about exploring the breadth of the protocol. great! it's now time to go deep and focus on quality and differentiated experiences. not copies of copies.
platforms divide; nostr unites
Great fireside between ODELL (npub1qny…95gx) and jack (npub1sg6…f63m) at Nostriga. I got a chance to listen to it now.

Regarding the question of whether Nostr will have more users than Twitter/X in five years (~500 million), my base case would be no, actually. And I say that as a huge Nostr fan and daily user.

In the long arc of time, Nostr's addressable market is nearly unlimited (basically everyone who uses the internet could be using Nostr in some form), but I expect somewhat of a slower burn. Infrastructure build-out type stuff. And breaching a network effect with a better solution is generally quite a long uphill climb.

To me, Nostr is successful once it starts serving tens of millions of people well. I expect it to be more of a quality over quantity thing for a while. Bitcoin is almost 16 years in and still isn't at 500 million users. But for many of those people, it was lifechanging.

I'd like to be surprised to the upside, but I also don't want people to think that if Nostr is "only" at tens of millions of people in five years, or 100+ million but still sub-Twitter, that it underachieved. It's tiny right now, and numbers anywhere approaching that would be a huge increase.

Nostr is a great improvement for everyone using it. But sometimes it takes people time to see why a given solution is better than what they have, or to realize they have a problem at all.

So in the meantime I monitor Nostr's success by the quality and quantity of developer activity, the capability of the protocol as a freedom tool or the shortcomings it still has for that use case, the quality of the conversations throughout the ecosystem, how many people consider it to be lifechanging tech compared to centralized social media, and in time, steady growth.

The arrest of Telegram founder, presumably for refusing to censor content, is the biggest signal that what we're doing here on #Nostr is so important to the future of humanity it's almost immeasurable. Let's keep up the good fight #Nostriches and not worry too much about MAUs, because where we're going, it's a fight for our freedom.
