This is interesting: I was bemused to read that the yard was originally defined as the distance from nose to fingertips, when I had always guesstimated fabric by going shoulder to fingertips, but it turns out that ells, traditionally used to measure only fabric, were in fact twice a cubit, which is the distance from shoulder to fingertips.
And now I wonder if people getting taller has changed the practical definition of a yard, or if this was some old haberdashery holdover.
