This ancient Egyptian marvel, approximately 3,500 years old, is New York City's oldest outdoor monument and the oldest man-made object in Central Park.\n\nOriginally erected in Heliopolis to honor Pharaoh Thutmose III's 30-year reign, the obelisk was carved from a single granite block, standing 69 feet tall and weighing around 200 tons. \n\nAfter being toppled and buried by Persians in 525 B.C., it was rediscovered by Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus and relocated to Alexandria. There, it was placed in front of Cleopatra’s Caesarium, earning its nickname, \"Cleopatra's Needle.\"\n\nGifted to the United States in 1879, the obelisk's journey to New York was a remarkable feat. It was carefully lowered in Alexandria, shipped on the wooden cargo ship Dessoug, and transported to Central Park over 19 days.\n\n On January 22, 1881, the obelisk was officially erected in Central Park, with about 10,000 spectators in attendance.
