Your example of connecting this with the physical is a good point. Diction like “cyber attacks,” [digital] identity theft, or [digital] defamation have serious physical, irl impacts -let alone the emotional/physical harm done, in a “Body Keeps the Score” way. These are not merely words, I like that you said that.

When our conversation started he mentioned that online hate was the main target, and I was fully onboard with that. Where he lost me was when he slowly drifted into talking about the prohibition of virtually burning the Israeli flag and the broader lack of allowance for criticism of the Israeli government. While anti-Semitism should absolutely be condemned, the inability to voice opposition to the actions of a government -any government- sets a dangerous precedent. Shielding a government from dissent under the guise of historical atonement creates an environment where allegiance is enforced rather than nurtured.

I wish these things were easier to define. Like you, I wrestle internally with two conflicting ideologies. I want freedom, but I don’t want anarchy. I love encryption, but I’m not a crypto-anarchist.
