There's a captivating article in the Jan.16, 2025 issue of the New York Review of Books that draws parallels between the Scopes trial of 1925 in Dayton, TN and the religious/cultural devolution of the current day. One hundred years on and we're almost in the same place.
Adam Hochschild in his piece "Evolution in the Dock" reviews Brenda Wineapple's book, "Keeping the Faith: God, Democracy and the Trial That Riveted a Nation."
It was H.L Mencken who kept the pot stirred all throughout the trial with his contempt for southern states. He liked culture wars. In truth, the town welcomed both groups with open hospitality.
Hochschild is even handed in his review/critique of Wineapple's book. I have long subscribed to the NYRB and recommend it to nearly everyone. Intelligent reading. 📚 #Books
