I also use Google Calendar on an Android phone. I have several separate calendars. I can turn them off individually -- click the hamburger in the UL corner, and uncheck the box in the list of calendars.
I confess that I can't figure out how to *make* one of these calendars on the Android app -- but on the web app, you click the gear -> Settings and there's an option for creating a new calendar.
