One thing revealed by the public debate over student use of generative AI is the extent to which we've already reduced the issue of plagiarism to a question of legal right, when other concerns are more germane. For example, the role of writing in training students to elaborate and test an idea, in developing a voice, in exploring selfhood by expressing not just ideas but also feelings and attitudes. Even if AI isn't plagiarism, its use deprives students of those opportunities.
