I'm throwing this out to the collective fediverse hive mind to see if anyone has any useful input.
My wife wanted a screen for our new kitchen. That was the remit. a "screen" just that.
I asked her to elaborate and she wanted to be able to read recipes, play music, control the lights , use voice commands etc etc.
Ok. So a tablet I assumed. However after much Googling (the problem is RIGHT there in front of me!) it seemed to suggest a Google nest hub max was the best thing to get (Now why would Google be sending me links suggesting a Google product was best I wonder... in hindsight)
So I got it for her for Christmas.
And she hates it.
it's less like a tablet. More like a google TV box crossed with a Nest Speaker.
I CAN show recipes but CAN'T access saved ones. It does show YouTube videos but can't interact with her facebook. She has a lot of recipes saved in chrome but she can't see how to access them (and I've tried too) Seems it's very locked down.
SO now I'm looking at an actual tablet for her. However I don't just want a plain tablet. I want something with weather, time and appointments at a glance, an easy to navigate interface for web browsing and links, widgets linked to saved pages or sites.
I'm sure an android tablet will do this, I just don't know which one. I don't like the fire tablets. Like google they're really locked down and restrictive and I'd rather have something she can use without the complications of me rooting it.
I don't want apple as We have no other apple devices in the house and I want my existing google infrastructure (Google nest speakers in all rooms, a chromecast on the tv, google nest cameras at front and rear of house etc) to play nice.
I also use #HomeAssistant and would like to use that on the device too.
I guess an android tablet with a UI replacement mod would suffice I just wonder if anyone else has a tablet in the kitchen and how they use it.
She needs to set timers, load recipes, play music and everything else with voice commands as she'll likely be baking and have hands covered in dough.
Any advice?
