npub1k9arkn78gmdp5ew20r44aqwwu84wjhvshjf9kcht46heh4zajthsjjm3yh (npub1k9a…m3yh) I will continue to scream and whine about how Twitterites still refuse to go somewhere better for no reason, but I wonder if the quality of the Masto software itself is a major factor in holding them back. Yeah, many of them bitch about there being no shitbot algo to get them depressingly addicted or how their 30M-subscriber pedophile (fuck Dream) hasn't joined. There being a 500-character limit, no quote posting, and no official way to find instances with the moderation level and features you want is something reasonable people would not want, though. People will speak with far more than 500 characters, and they will use quote posts, and they will need admins that will give them leeway for mistakes or non-bigoted but unpopular opinions. Yet, there's nothing for Mastodon to stand out on besides being open-source (to which there's platforms like Cohost and Minds) and "healthy" (to which it's something people need but don't want).
That's also why I really wished that https://joinmastodon.org was designed better. I've already talked about how people hang out with others based on vibe and not topic like we're toddlers, but I also wish people could sort instances by what custom features they have. You should be able to sort out vanilla instances and pick ones that have the bare minimum (aka ones running Glitch-Soc and Chuckya). Instead, it became one of the major reasons people find Fedi confusing in general, where people instead have to recommend instances through word-of-mouth like in the 1980s.
