This might be a hot take idk, but I don’t think kink should be mainstream, or be part of a large cultural phenomenon.

Choking shouldn’t be done by vanilla people who think it’s what people usually do in sex, and get themselves hurt. Seriously shit like that needs to be cleared up. I don’t want people out there doing kink stuff without knowing the REALLY IMPORTANT basics like in depth consent and safety.

I think lolicon and shotacon should be a niche section for those who genuinely enjoy it rather than be a massive part of anime fan culture and turned into a meme readily accepted by some people without question while alienating others. As much as I am a shotacon myself, I don’t actually think it’s good for most anime to exclusively pander to me, or only make stories about teenagers… it’s very limiting, ignores the valuable perspectives of adults, focuses too much on youth which helps a lot of industries prey on your depression and insecurity, and it creates a closed-off bubble for anime fans to be easily influenced into thinking certain things and attitudes are ok irl (if they were already an uncritical person) lolisho should be a club not Times Square imo. Of course, I’m a strong believer in that you can’t always control for uncritical or immature people who misunderstand. It’s not really your fault. But when it becomes the headliner… I think the ripple effect it has starts mattering a little more whether we want it to or not.

Even when I accept or even love ideas as a kink, I don’t think certain tropes in mainstream media (like born sexy yesterday for example) are good for general culture… good for feminism… yknow stuff like that. Point is I still believe in criticism even if the reason something is included is “it turns me on”… most of the time it’s not really kink exactly but just centuries old fetishism that was only recently diverted with like… ideas of equal rights. I’m into housewife stuff but that’s because I’m critical of the terror that is “traditional values” and the position they put women into. The demographic of that specific kind of person with that kink and those beliefs is so small, that I’m sorry… if you are going to do it in a blockbuster your film might need to be about criticizing or satirizing trad values. Context won’t be sending the message.

I wouldn’t extend the same scrutiny on someone’s personal project though, for the same reason someone might not draw for the purposes of looking or being like a professional. criticizing them on that front seems pointless to me. Unsolicited. Personal projects in which someone does as they like don’t feel the same as a large production by many people in suits. Then again… in the internet age especially, one can’t choose just how much attention their creation gets. Where is the line drawn? I don’t know.
