They don't want companies selling their data, posts, etc. Or using it to train AI.
Though, there's over 25,000 Fediverse instances, so make no mistake, this place IS fully public and there's no way to tell who is reading your public posts at any time. If you want something to stay relatively "private" then set your post to followers only or just don't post it on Fedi.
