I mean, it's possible, and I have seen it happen to some prominent figures and media personalities (with consequences mind you).
On a large scale though, they operate on a collective consciousness, essentially a living example of the "appeal to authority" fallacy, which is also why they hate the NPC meme so much, it hits too close to home.
As long as the media and centralized places like Wikipedia tell them one thing and their comrades also subscribe to it, no amount of evidence or even outright proof will ever sway them.
You could set their house on fire in front of them, and if Wikipedia told them it was a right wing conspiracy theory... well, they would burn to death.
