Treasure Island is an odd, and rapidly changing place. It's an artificial island built just after the Bay Bridge was completed to host a 1939 World's Fair. It was planned to be converted into a municipal airport, but the Navy took it over after WW II started, using it as a base through the cold war. In the 1990's it was decommissioned as part of the BRAC, and is being converted (slowly due to serious environmental issues) to residential and commercial use.
