Some people seem to have already romanticized the Internet in 2000. Don’t we all remember the ad-free experience back then? /s
Really weird that the AdBlock project got started in 2002. 😉
In fact, by 2004 things got so bad that I dug into the massive Mozilla codebase which I barely knew at all and attempted to implement a pop-up blocker that wasn’t quite as trivially circumvented.
I produced a massive patch that had no chance of going anywhere. Luckily for all of us, Johnny Stenback picked up that effort and implemented something far more doable. The new pop-up blocker shipped with Firefox 1.0, and pop-ups as an advertising form started to decline. Good riddance.
